The Horse's Hoof Davis Soaking Boots
All sizes of Davis Horse
from 00 through size 6 (mini to draft)
All Davis boots ship with FREE Davis Therapeutic Pad inserts! Removeable, provides extra cushion & holds medication. (Davis Therapeutic Pads are thin and flat, not to be confused with Easycare Comfort Pads.)
Chart below: the exact measurements of the inside bottom of the boot. The boot should fit fairly loosely, so be sure to choose a size that will allow a little extra room. General rule of thumb: size 00 is usually for minis, size 0 for ponies, size 1 for small horses, size 2 for average horses, size 3 for large horses, size 4 for warmbloods, and size 5 and 6 for drafts.
Stop! Wait! Before you automatically order the size 6 boot (because you have a giant horse!), make sure to take measurements of your draft horse's foot! The size 6 boots are expensive to ship if you need to exchange for a smaller size - and most people get the size 6 and find out it is TOO BIG for their draft horse!!
|Size||Width of boot||Length of boot|
|Size 00||3 3/4"||4 1/4"|
|Size 0||4 1/2"||5"|
|Size 1||5 1/4"||5 5/8"|
|Size 2||5 5/8"||6 1/8"|
|Size 3||6 1/4"||7"|
|Size 4||7 1/4"||7 3/4"|
|Size 5||8"||8 1/2"|
|Size 6||9 1/2"||9 1/2"|

Why order your boots from The Horse's Hoof? Because we are long-time barefooters, and we actually use all the boots! Instead of a salesperson, you'll be talking with a real rider. We can give you practical, real world advice.
Your barefoot horse's hooves may be soaked on a regular basis, even daily, in clean water covering the coronet band. Soaking really helps before a trim, to make the job much easier!
More attention should be paid to this whenever the weather is dry, or if you live in a dry climate. There are distinct changes that happen to the hoof capsule whenever it is depleted of moisture, and there will be actual measurable shrinking of the hoof capsule. If you are rehabbing a horse with hoof problems, contraction, navicular or founder, you might want to soak more often.
How long? If the hooves are fairly healthy, 15 minutes is long enough. If you live in a dry climate and/or are dealing with a severe hoof deformity, maybe longer - but in a dry climate, be sure to put a natural dressing on the hoof to seal the water in (we recommend Hoof Alive). For soaking out an abscess, forget the epsom salts--add a splash of apple cider vinegar to a water filled boot. If you have an open wound on the hoof, you can also try soaking sometimes with a little bit of Thrush Crush Propolis added to the water.
What about soaking in mud instead? The problem is the ph balance of the mud. If you don't know what it is and how it will affect the hooves, you could make your horses' hooves too hard or too soft! If you don't wish to use boots, try teaching your horse to stand in a bucket.
